Top 3 Burger Places in the Black Hills

If you had to ask me to rate the below three places in order of greatest burger to slightly less great burger, I couldn’t do it. These are all fabulous at their craft and that craft is serving up one hell of a good burger. The atmosphere of each place is unique – to each its own – from rustic and new, to just plain rustic, to definitely not new. But don’t judge an establishment by its appearance, or the ridiculously long line waiting outside to get in.

  1. Sugar Shack  | 22495 Hwy 385, Deadwood, SD |  Website  |  Located between Deadwood and Hill City on Hwy 385, Sugar Shack is a popular stop for anyone out on the trails ATVing or dirt-biking for the day. Located in the heart of the Black Hills, with the woods and a pond just behind it, Sugar Shack is an immediate favorite when it comes to a great place that serves burgers.
  2. Lewie’s Saloon and Eatery  |  711 S Main Street, Lead, SD |  Website  |  Located just outside of Lead, Lewie’s a jam-packed little place that serves a tasty burger on a bun. It’s must-stop if you are in the Deadwood area, out biking the Mickelson Trail, or heading down from Terry Peak after a long day on the slopes.
  3. Black Hills Burger and Bun  |  441 Mt. Rushmore Road, Custer, SD  |  Website  |  Located in the middle of downtown Custer, get to Black Hills Burger and Bun early before they sell out of their world famous buns. It’s a tiny little place, but the food is amazing and the service is unbeatable.

IN GLUTEN FREE NEWS: Black Hills Burger and Bun has the option for gluten free buns with their burgers. They are very sensitive to celiacs! I have not tried eating at either Sugar Shack and Lewie’s, so I can’t vouch for those (but I’ve eaten at them before I was diagnosed, so I know they are amazing.)

  • Laurel - You MUST try the Sled Haus in Lead. The locals rave about it! Definitely not for the faint of heart, though – the potatoes are fried in bacon fat. 😉ReplyCancel

  • Jen - How can an article be published about burgers in the black hills without mentioning sled haus? I can’t believe the person who wrote this article actually visited the hills because if they did, they would know we all go to sled hausReplyCancel

    • - I am new the black hills and have celiac so haven’t had a chance to explore a ton of options since July. Everyone says sled haus though so thanks!ReplyCancel

  • Lesley - All mentioned are great places for burgers but… How about the Moonshine Gulch Saloon in Rochford??ReplyCancel
